In the words of Alan Tweedie: My grandfather Fred Somerville (from Edinburgh) was a POW in Stalag VIIIb from 1940 onwards. My grandfather was also a Catholic and on the back of one of the pictures he wrote : “Our little chapel which is erected in a small section of one of the bulgalows. It’s capacity is about 50 people.The construction was carried out by our own lads with ply-board , cardboard , silver paper etc from Red Cross cases and cartons.The picture of the Crucifixion is a painting which is extremely fine and beautiful, it also is the work of one of our lads.” My grandfather was also on the Death March and you can find his diary on the following link: http://www.camomilesworld.com/raid/somervillediary.htm |
